when i drop my cellphone on the ground

when i accidentally drop my cellphone on the ground or elbow it off a table in my room, it harmlessly falls to the ground. there's a case on it. it doesnt break. like an iphone. the screen stays intact. thank goodness.

friday night was the cambridge dance party. i wouldnt have made it if jeff hadnt tipped me off about it. i went last year after finding out about it on boston.com, pretty much outta nowhere. i relied on chance this year too, and thankfully made it.

it was madness. i swear everyone shows up to this thing. more ppl than you can imagine. they close down a part of mass ave, get a professional soundsystem, all these crazy lights, its awesome. there are 4 huge speaker stanchions (ooooh good word, almost as good as evince), images projected on city hall, a dj booth, etc.

i showed up after 9 or something, the guy played michael jackson the whole time, which was pretty awesome, and a fitting tribute. it's sad that he passed, but it was good that we celebrated his life and music.

so yeah, there were more young ppl out in the middle of the street than at anywhere else in greater boston from about 7-11pm on friday night. they have to shut it down at 11pm cause there's a senior center right there.

i showed up with matt and adam, we danced a bunch, watched some breakdancing, sang along, watched it rain, watched the rain miraculously disappear, etc. there are 3 youtube videos that ill post in case you want to check it out some more

later!

"trying to think of LL lines in the back of my head"

rap lyrics again. this might become a theme.

i went and saw Starkey at goodlife bar in boston on wednesday night. the starkbot. the starkbass. the man of seclusiasis. the man from illadelphia. the legend from mary anne hobbs's generation bass show.

going in, i knew that the bar was high. this show had the potential to be better than the Caspa show that i saw last year, but it would be a tall order.

the winner? Starkey, by a nose. or a record. or a laptop. no matter -- he killed it. dropped exclusive tunes, got on the mic, got the crowd fired up, played straight for an hour and a half, very high energy. had the place thumping.

though it was raining, a good crowd showed up. rowdy and loud and amped. i took some photos that ill post later. here's the terrible flyer (not just my opinion, the boston dubstep djs felt the same way).

it was Starkey's first show in Boston, so we had to show him how we get down. i screamed a lot. i tried not to elbow anyone. a speaker blew out suddenly but came back to life, Starkey accidentally shut off his system at one point, but it was an amazing set with many highlights.

i talked to dj alex incyde for a while. we talked about hotflush recordings (the label he works on), online publishing, the north shore, nyc, sub.fm, bedroom broadcasting, etc. dj pandai'a dropped a brand new mount kimbie tune. incredible.

here's the link for hotflush. they've gotten a lot of attention with mount kimbie. i really feel that mount kimbie is revolutionary and making their own sound.

Hotflush Recordings

i'm very lucky to live in boston where i get to see some of the best dubstep djs in the world, though Starkey says that he plays "street bass." his gutter music is chock full of thick bass and big beats. a night i wont forget

davesplat.com

it's official -- i've registered a domain. which you might ask? what else...

davesplat.com

it's been fun doing this blog and having ppl read it. i wanna give a shoutout to the top readers/non creepers -- you know who you are. i'd post your names but i'm actually not even entirely sure who reads this anymore.

please support me by commenting, emailing, etc. i actually have an email address @davesplat.com now, but i dont feel like putting it on the blog. so, if you dont have my email address and want to get in touch with me, please just post a comment.

thanks yall. couldn't have done it without you (oh yeah and im allowed to feel particularly good about maintaining a blog and not letting it die because now you all have twitter and i cant even understand what's going with all the @'s and stuff. it doesnt make any sense. but please keep it up, cause ive started checking yall out.)

this blog is a creative outlet for me, it lets me be weird, and it helps to have a responsive audience. so crush me, cause it's the best kind of motivation

and in the spirit of randomness, here's the first google image result for davesplat. this is not me, but it's still a dave, and he's still a splat.

peace

there was a soccer game yesterday

one team lost. one team won. i may write about it later, but i just read a couple terrible writeups about the game, so i'm just gonna let us all enjoy the moment for a bit before i chime in. best to just criticize bad sports writing rather than produce your own.

life is a game of chance of precipitation

haha! had to get that one out there

also, Mr. Kanye West has taken over Mr. 6Blocc as my favorite artist. i realized that last night. kanye is ahead of everyone. i really feel like he's always ahead of the game, ahead of the media, ahead of entertainment, ahead of everyone else. he's ahead of new york, he's ahead of la, etc. not sure if that makes much sense.

but if you listen to him its like he's from the future. fast forward.

the hollow tree

rainbow-colored raindrops cling to branches and plop in myriad hues on forest floor.

the edges of numbers become fractals when magnified.

beat matching blends dual vibrations into a shimmering thump.

Let me- Let me- Let me talk to ya

here's a great photo of Rena and Jed getting married. and there's Gabe, marrying them, as a justice of the peace of the great state of Vermont. what a beautiful photo.

im still not feelin 100 percent, weather is muggy, but at least it isnt raining nonstop. went to atwoods and sox game tonight with family, good times. dice k is struggling tho. totally cause he did the world baseball classic

oh well. at least letting daisuke win the world baseball classic for Japan made a lot of people in japan happy. like, millions of people. i guess thats cool. theyre down with boston.

I- I- I talk that

bluegrass at the cantab and way too many links

went and saw bluegrass at the cantab with arthur last night and some friends. bumped into some friends on the way out. arthur made dinner. amazing. a great night for which i thanked him.

i have a bunch of stuff that ive been saving (slash starring emails that i send to myself for later posting). i dono why i hold on to these things for so long then finally put them up months later. but better late than never

first, go check out Wordle - Beautiful Word Clouds. you just enter in an address or some text and it abstracts it and colors the words and stuff. i did one for my blog but it wasnt very exciting, but ill try it again and post the image.

second, enjoy this link One Greg Oden, 365 Days Project. this professional photographer took a photo every day with a greg oden action figure. the captions are amazing. i really really liked this one. found it via 365 days with an inanimate Greg Oden

third, pure fun silliness - Dickensurl.com. enter in a URL and it "shortens" it with a dickens quote. just tried it with my blog address and got this http://dickensurl.com/b0c4/Oh_gracious_why_wasnt_I_born_old_and_ugly. you know those url shortening things? i like this more than bitly or whatever the other ones are :)

fourth, very sad but necessary link - AP poll: Most students stressed, some depressed. it's a long article and not very exciting, but the gist is that an enormous percentage of college students are depressed. plain and simple. like, hundreds of thousands of kids it has to be. makes you wonder what kind of resources are available to them on campus, and how easy it is for them to ask for/get help

some more quick ones: Over the Wall - Abstract City Blog (artsy rendition of the berlin wall, its good to not forget about stuff like this)

Some Thoughts on the Lost Art of Reading Aloud. i use the tagline "a blog to be read aloud" because i think it's kind of funny, and because my Dad used to tell me to read stuff like poetry aloud, that it's the only way it can really be understood. i can't really state anything unequivocal about reading aloud, because i honestly dont do it that much and i dont read enough poetry, but its something to keep in mind

that's it for now. i hate to overwhelm, but this is the only way to post some stuff that impressed me. phew, im out of breath.

I have to admit i love the title

a new poem by Rena Mosteirin (thanks again!).
originally posted on White Whale Crossing

I have to admit i love the title

(a poem composed of fragments of Davesplat)

First of all, ladies and gentleman,
these boats have like 12 people on them

and they're on the ocean for days and weeks at a time
and there's like no space (the T was crowded but bearable)

and the captain was from Winchester too, believe it or not. Massachusetts.
(Get this -- the coxswain is from Winchester!)

Some guy who just wanted to shoot jump shots with me
went and got his shoes.
A good day (except the celtics lost, we're not gonna talk about it)

and i sound nothing like Yeezy.
This song rules.

There was an enormous oil tanker right in the middle of it all,
make it your desktop and you'll be able to get through the offseason.

Jeff: Doin' Work

Jeff graduated from Union yesterday. the commencement was magnificent. we sat under a tree so we did not have to shield our faces from the sun and we did not get sunburned. Jeff was happy, he showed me the Hug Bot, it was all very lovely.

Dad and I booked it on the drive home, and now I'm back, tired from getting up so early yesterday, but feelin good.

here's the man himself, just past the steps of the Nott Memorial, on the way to walkin across that stage. (note the yellow tassel -- it's cause he got anthro honors! who's the man...)

Congratulations Jeff. you've put in a lot of hard work, just like PJ Brown :)

oh yeah, Demers suggested a link. it's cool check it out. this guy has been starting a new blog every day, for like a long time. i think hes doing it every day for a year. man, that must be hard! lotta upkeep! hard to come up with new and fresh content all the time haha

anyway here it is. the guy's really funny and he had me crackin up (did Demers teach him everything he knows?). just scroll past the first post - Year of the Blog

fingertips fingertips mouth

computer monitors are flat skins without mouths. they silently wince when pinched. changing the resolution makes their eyes dilate. computer monitors blink on shut down.

an overcast day muddles surfaces. weak light whitens then darkens porcelain. the clouds sunbathe and turn over to tan their backs. below, we stumble down dark stairs at night.

a music library holds wax recordings of extinct voices. the harmonies and choruses are etched in black vinyl, captured like a wood carving. a needle pricks the wax and sound drips. the scratchy plops collect in amoeba-shaped pools on the floor. when poked, a soft dulcet center yields to the touch.

one dimensional echoes swirl in canyons with indian ghosts. three dimensional echoes bounce off nightclub walls, eroding voices and hearing. a two dimensional echo is a single film frame. 24 echoes per second produce an illusion of movement, catching the eyes attention like a peripheral predator.

hi everybody

i have some big news!

no i dont. gotcha.

that was a little cruel. i dont mean to tease, but...im feeling impish

weather sucks in new england. it was nice briefly on sunday. now, crap. i hope that the weekend is nice.

i'm going to union to jeffs graduation on saturday and sunday. so happy for the lil bro. cant really believe hes done. all grown up now, right?

he's taller than me, but i still get to call him little. forever. haha

Rena wrote an excellent poem, again using this blog for inspiration. i will post it later. this is the 3rd time she's done this, and i'm blessed that she does this art for me. i'm a pretty lucky guy

the photo below is from a nytimes article about grilling hogs in south carolina the old fashioned way. i always read these kind of articles...but never actually get to eat the food they talk about. blast!

i cant do it this weekend, but the weekend after i wanna go to multiple farmers markets, eat local!

magic won last night. the caffeine in chocolate keeps me awake. 15 minutes in a hot tub can change your world.

i wanna go swimming

funny band names

this is all from the WMBR concert report. i hope that one day i come up with a band name as good as these...

We Met Aliens

Hot Protestants

Ledyard

Ribs

When Girls Kiss Girls

Natalie Portman's Shaved Head

Totem

He Is Legend

Black Market Hero

Previously on Lost

you can see it

hey. ive had to take down some blogs from The Internet. these blogs were either not being updated or i didnt feel that i was very close to the person whose blog it was.

i also read this nytimes article about ppl who are stopping blogging, realizing that it isnt always a pursuit with much of a reward. i wasnt gonna post the link cause its kind of a downer (focuses mostly on the negatives of keeping a blog without much of a purpose) but here it is

Blogs Falling in an Empty Forest

i have to admit i love the title tho.

so, are there any blogs out there that im missing? do you have any friends that i might know that have great blogs that should go up here? i just feel bad taking blogs down. it's like im chopping down trees, but noone hears them!

anything you want from me gotta wait

hey whats up. im really into rap lyrics lately (cool story). have you heard ego by kanye west? that's my jam right now. actually put in some effort memorizing the words. i sound nothing like yeezy. ive never really been into lyrics, always preferred the beat, but kanye is a genius, cant ignore the man

cape yesterday was awesome. did a little kayaking and sitting in the sun, hit up the beach. now i am a langosta! i am red all over. kinda ridiculous. thank god i had some moisturizer with aloe vera. i purposely didnt put sunblock on cause i wanted to get some color, but boy am i red now. its all good tho, had a wonderful weekend

i wanted to post some photos of washington winning the iras this weekend. the backdrop is so beautiful that you gotta check it out.

also, something really cool about the winning washington freshman boat (possibly the fastest freshman boat EVER [i think theyre the fastest freshman boat ever -- they had two german national team rowers and had the fastest time on saturday, faster than the 1v!])

get this -- the coxswain is from winchester! and she went to winsor! too cool. she's the redhead in the photos below holding the trophy up. her name is Laura Denman. congrats Laura!

also posted photos of the varsity eight, the team, and the coach getting the gatorade treatment (ah memories of paul pierce and doc rivers).

also, drew, if youre reading this, i know ive been flaking on you, but were gonna chill, soon. im gonna call you later tonight and you should come over and watch the game tuesday night or thursday night if its not too late

i also watched the nba finals game last night. disappointing. after gortat and someone else missed like 4 free throws in a row i thought to myself "this game is going to be close no matter what." sure enough it was so close that it went into overtime (even tho i swear to god i saw courtney lees last second attempt drop in before it bounced wide)

aright. looks like im doing a decent job of blogging again, gonna try to keep it up. whats up with yall?

hello

hey whats up. im on cape cod, and lovin it. im comin back later today. we just paddled around and rowed around a pond a little bit, about to go to the beach

its beautiful outside. sunny and 75 degrees. couldnt be nicer.

watched the horse race yesterday. i picked dunkirk to win, who led the whole race, then got edged by summer sam or whatever the winning horses name at the end

i also watched the national rowing championships online on a live webcast over the last several days. its been a ton of fun to watch the IRAs live online, and the video and audio commentary were great. i watched washington come from behind to beat cal yesterday, an incredible sprint that brought the huskies to the gold medal stand

the races were at lake natoma in sacramento california at the base of the sierra nevadas. the backdrop was stunning

the hours i will never get back

there are hours, ungodly amounts of hours, that i will never get back. how did i spend these hours?

sitting on a couch.

watching basketball.

this is what afflicts me...

here's some good stuff from the yahoo basketball sports blog (which i really like). the best part? -- some of these jokes you would only get if you watched all of the ads and the between-the-timeouts-garbage during the agonizingly long 3 hour games. also, it's funnier if youve watched kobe doin work (ive watched...most of it)

the 2009 nba playoffs has been a ton of fun to watch. i've watched a lot of the games with clynton, just us posted up, somehow watching most of a marathon like game (having the dvr helps).

my fav moments/memories so far -- big baby hitting the game winner, courtney lee dunking on everyone, and anything the birdman does (dunks and blocks, preferably). what are yours?

i also included 3 photos at the bottom of that downhill race in england where they chase the big roll of cheese. i think it was in big shots in the boston globe recently, but i cant find the link now

from Too much Rod Benson: Amazing

"Now it's time for the NBA Finals and I wonder what craziness awaits? Maybe Jordan Farmar slaps Rafer Alston just because. Maybe Dwight Howard hits his first legendary game winner. Maybe it's a three.

Maybe Kobe misses Game 1 due to the shower he needs to take after LeBron's talcum powdered their whole house.

Maybe LeBron moves out of Kobe's house altogether and rents a copy of "Return of the King." He'll be back.

Maybe Spike Lee drops "J.J. Redick: Shootin' Treys." It follows him as he shoots treys in practice. It'd probably be as interesting as "Doin' Work" was.

Maybe a "Reggie's Mailbag" spot will be witty and funny."
