flood part deux

well folks, there are many rivers and lakes and ponds here that are very, very high right now. there are towns and neighborhoods and houses and cars and businesses that are under a lot of water. not sure how long it's gonna be til we see something like this again.

my hometown was in the news for some bad and nasty flooding there too. terrible stuff. i hope that no dams fail and that we get through this relatively unscathed.

i'm trying to blog more, i really like blogging, just gotta keep at it. i was fighting a cold yesterday and am also fighting a cold today, but i think i'm gonna drink a ton of water and hopefully beat it. i refuse to get sick.

soooo let's see what else is happening. we had our first (and last) basketball playoff game last night. i don't really want to get into it, but it wasn't pretty. still, a great season, i had so much fun, and everyone's relatively happy. good times.

oh yeah i didnt mention that i made a pear crisp this weekend from the moosewood cookbook. it was pretty good. i think i prefer the crisp that you actually make for like apple crisp than a crisp that's just oats, sugar, and butter.

i'm starting to read a book, "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe", you may have heard of it. a one-time friend gave it to me in high school. she underlined a section of it that i'm not sure i want to post here as it's somewhat unsettling. i'm thinking about it. it's a really good book, and just kinda funny that it took me so long to actually start reading it. but seriously -- better late than never.

ok folks, i'll be in touch.

bye, Dave

more the type to plan it

hey. i just had a good weekend of watching basketball and eating and hanging out. i tried a couple new jamaican jerk chicken recipes and they both came out pretty well. here are the recipes. for one i just marinated it for 3 and a half hours, the other i marinated overnight

Jerk Chicken Recipe: Spicy Jamaican Comfort Food -- this was yummy, nice and spicy.

Jamaican Jerk Chicken recipe and history - Jamaica Travel and Culture .com -- this one was really good. i got a cleaver for prepping and chopping. using the cleaver was awesome.

here are a couple cool articles.

Engineers offer peek into semisecret project for US military - The Boston Globe -- this is all about some super secret technology that's been in development for like decades. it's going to turn an american soldier into spiderman. crazy.

Woods, Augusta a good match - The Boston Globe -- an interesting article about the intersection of tiger woods, augusta county club, golf, the masters, and women. take from it what you will. my favorite excerpt:

"For most of my life, but especially since becoming a father some 13 years ago, I’ve believed there are far more good women than good men in the world. I’ll always believe that. I think they’re every bit as intelligent as men, equally worthy and competent in the workplace, tremendous athletes. But, most of all, women are far superior by total number when judged as decent people. "

bam! that's right. we all knew it.

ok i gotta motor. cya.

the lives of men: mundane idiosyncrasies

nothing fascinates me more than quotidian details and mundane idiosyncrasies regarding the lives of men. i am going to write a book about it. it's going to contain a lot of dull facts about certain men. here are some examples:

Edward, 23: Edward has never had Thai food. he tells people that he does not like Thai food even though he has never tried it.

Bob, 31: Bob likes watching "American Idol". he watches American Idol every week with his dog sprawled out on the shag carpet in front of the tv.

Apollo, 27: Apollo once went to Milwaukee and got food poisoning. because of this, he always roots against the green bay packers.

see, doesn't that sound like a great book? it would just be chock full of boring snippets from male individuals. shoot, i could fill up a whole book about myself! it would have things like:

Dave wears glasses that are two years old. he wants new glasses, but hasn't taken the necessary steps to attain these glasses.

Dave has a new vacuum. his new vacuum is actually capable of cleaning the carpet in his room.

Dave needs to buy a gallon of skim milk. he really likes skim milk.

[end sarcasm]

hi everyone, it's me, i swear. i like making fun of myself, and i definitely make fun of people such as my brother, dad, and best bros. gotta keep it loose ya know! i hope i'm not being cruel, just trying to joke around. what are some mundane idiosyncrasies of your life?

wow what a weird post, let's make the next one weirder...

i got a link for ya. full disclosure -- i've only watched part of this video and haven't listened to it. but it has people riding cars on frozen lakes in new hampshire. how could you possibly resist watching it?!:
On Thin Ice - Video Library - The New York Times

here's my abstract screengrab of the splashscreen thingie for nytimes video. how do you feel about nytimes video? i think some of it's pretty cool, i should watch it more.

do this, do that

hey folks! wow what a nice day outside! 70 degrees. i guess it's gonna get cold soon, but til then, i'm lovin it.

right now i am torn between sitting on my back porch and playing basketball. maybe i will do both! i got a lot of exclamation points here, but i just need to exclaim how excited i am!

ariiiight. so i watched basketball for like 48 hours. the first day (thursday) was the most exciting day of basketball i've ever seen. wow, and i mean wow. favorite moments -- murray st winning at the buzzer, and the end of the ohio game, just watching the ohio guys act like they've been there before after they totally dusted georgetown. good stuff.

well, i slept in today and feel good. i've eaten my banana, drank some water, and shaved. i got up at 10 (so i dont even really think i got 8 hours of sleep), but i'm feeling great. i have better saturdays when i get up at 10 rather than noon anyway.

so much i wanna do! i wanna go clothes shopping, grocery shopping, get a car wash, i dono, do other stuff. not enough time, you know? it's cool tho. that's the beauty of life. it's up to you to do what you wanna do. i love free will. i will defend free will all day. nothing is predetermined i tell you! nothing! life is what you make of it.

aright folks i'm sitting in my bedroom behind my light blocking curtains. there's a whole world out there. i gtg. later.

here are a couple photos of the flooding in my area from this week. awful stuff. some people had some pretty bad headaches.

this has been me most of the day. watch the video and you'll understand

brackets are complete. i'm sure mine are mostly horrible. last year i had one bracket that had one quarter entirely correct except for one pick (cal over maryland, i'll never forget it).

this year none of the bc blogs are doing pools, which is too bad because last year they were really funny.

well, at least i can be happy about my brackets for another 12 hours or so. then the agony begins.

happy march madness everyone, it's one of my favorite times of year, Dave

bad bad bad

all by myself.

folks, what's happenin. it's a beautiful day outside. after three consecutive days of rain, the sun has come out.

there has been some serious flooding in the region, and i'm sure a lot of people have had to deal with some situations that were not ideal. luckily, i kind of live on a hill, so i didnt have to deal with it.

my mom said it's the worst flooding she can remember since 1997, when my towns high school flooded and was shut down for several months. the high schoolers had class at my middle school from like 7am to noon, and us middle schoolers had class from 12-5pm. those were the days. sleeping in til 11am, watching sunsets from class. good times.

i had a good weekend. friday night i just hung out and made chocolate pudding, which turned out really well. saturday day i did some things, then went over to a friends where i heated up some gnocchi and pasta sauce, then cooked a nice lemony green beans dish. yummy.

saturday night i got invited to a house party right down the street from me. i met up with a couple friends there. it was a 1920s themed party. it seemed like everyone had a costume but me! it was fun though, playing loud music, dancing, hanging out, joking around. some good, clean fun. stayed until 2am (at which point it turned to 3am), then went to sleep after 4am.

barely left the house on sunday. people were coming over to my place all day which was awesome, i barely had to go out in the rain! the brackets came out sunday evening and i started researching (still got a long ways to go though).

the flooding was kinda nuts yesterday. multiple roads were blocked off, and i blew it and went the wrong way more than once. there were a bunch of towns nearby that got it real bad. i didnt see too much craziness, but the traffic was pretty ugly.

we won our basketball game last night. i scored 4 points. i also airballed a free throw and missed a wide open layup. but i made the call to play man defense instead of zone, because i thought we needed more energy and better rebounding, and sure enough they only scored 5 points in the first half. this was the team that beat us in the first game when i wasnt there, so it felt good to get revenge. we have a rematch next week with a team that weve already lost to, so i want revenge next week too.

gotta focus up and get to the gym a bunch. i haven't lifted weights in several weeks. part of that is because i dont want to beef up too much. i've also been trying to do cardio so that i have some decent fitness.

ok i'm gonna start compiling some links for a links post. i'll give you some highlights. i'll try to post more this week.

cya! -d

eternal and graceful

water in head, fire in belly. cool head, warm belly. heat up, cold down.

to be continued...

one hand

the whispers of burning thoughts float through inky night. behind, burning cinders and embers in wide open saucer eyes show the blue flicker of an oil lamp.

chocolate pudding

i made chocolate pudding. it's in my stomach. it feels very heavy. it was good though, and i made whipped cream and put in too much cinnamon. yum. foodnetwork magazine style, yet again.

well, it's daylight savings i hear. i even know how to set my watch now, so i'm super prepared for it.

hey, boston university plays vermont at noon tomorrow for a chance to go to the big dance. let's go terriers! beat the catamounts!

i watched the movie FishTank (2009) last night. wow i was blown away. a stunner. very good movie, very well done. recommended. but i have weird tastes, and i can't say it will be your cup of tea -- even if you're British!

i'm getting kind of lazy about putting links up. uhhhh maybe i need to be more adventurous in my browsing. what probably happens is that i've become too picky and am too self-conscious about sharing stuff. i gotta get over that. after all, there is a lot in this world that's impressive!

oh yeah i watched this little short movie that had daedalus, nobody, jrocc, and ras g. i had heard of daedalus, jrocc, and ras g, but not nobody. the movie was really good. it's called "Secondhand Smoke". it's a documentary about tasking each of these musicians with $5 to acquire 5 records that they are supposed to make a song with. it's only like half an hour but they did a good job with the editing and crammed a lot in there.

i've been watching and playing basketball. we got schooled last night. next game's monday. gotta man up.

boston college season is over. thank god. moving on (but cautiously optimistic about next years chances).

looks like it's gonna rain here all weekend. week. i gotta get to bed. adios amigos.

blogger overloaded

hey folks. i've become overloaded. let me try to piece the circuits back together.

i did as little this weekend as possible. it was incredible. hung out with a couple friends, barely went to a couple places, cooked a bunch of food. except i cut my thumb sunday while cutting vegetables. doh! first time i've cut myself in a long time, i gotta be more careful! sheesh.

i did quite a number on the ol left thumb, but it's gonna make it. i hope it's 100% by my basketball game on thursday.

i've been watching healthy amounts of basketball. that's probably the majority of what i will be doing for the next couple weeks. good times...

the weather is warming up, slowly! believe it or not, i played basketball outside on saturday. it was awesome! i threw down and worked out and it was pretty good. windy, but plenty warm.

i don't have many impressive links to put up, but they're out there. i've mostly been reading my old faithfuls. steady stream of internet news. hmmmm if someone gives me some topics of stuff that they're interested in then i'll dig up some impressive links, how about that.

i'll cya, D

i would recommend that you procure Eschew #2 from Rob Sergel, either directly or from his website.

down music

hi everyone.

it's a beautiful day. the sun is shining. the birds aren't chirping, but they're coming back to their homes in the trees.

looks like i went another middle of the week with no posts. hmmm not a good sign. i can give you something of an update though!

everything's good, i've been staying busy. my two best friends are both out of town for the weekend, so hopefully i'll be able to catch up with some other people.

there was a mini reunion for other alums from my year in my area a couple days ago, but i didn't make it. i did sign up for my 5th year reunion though. crazy! can't believe it's here already. i wonder if we're gonna set the record for the most people to attend...we'll see!

weather has been nasty, but today i guess it cleared up. i swear i saw a thermometer say 50 degrees today, and that ain't bad!

we won our basketball game last night. we're 3 and 3, .500! pretty good. i played the full 40 minutes and i'm actually in decent shape. nice...

celtics game tonight, then another one on sunday. i imagine i'll be watching some college hoops too. i saw providence lose to pittsburgh on a buzzer beater last night. bummer! i hope at least one new england team makes the tournament, but it may not happen.

i got a poem for you. i really hope i haven't already posted this on here. i can't find the title of it, and i honestly don't know if these ellipses were in the original version, but i like the poem.

Let us dig our gardens and not be elsewhere:
Let us take long walks in the open air...
Let us bathe in the rivers and lakes...
Let us indulge in games...
Let us be more simple: simple and true in our minds above all. Let us be ourselves.

eating, and then eating

i really need to be going to sleep but i had to post again. i couldn't leave weird weirdness on my front page, i needed something else, or at least something freshly weird.

i had a great weekend. there was a party, olympic hockey watching, hanging out, and cooking. a lot of cooking. i made lemon bars which were delicious. i made corn fritters for the first time.

both food network recipes. i swear i'm gonna get a subscription to that magazine, it's changed my life.

we also did ridiculous braised ribs with mushrooms. insane. after i ate mine i literally had to collapse sideways on the couch for a while. to top it all off, orange chocolate bread pudding.

Orange-Chocolate Bread Pudding Recipe

Corn-Industry Fritters Recipe

Braised Shortribs with Mushrooms Recipe - we didn't use short ribs we just used enormous bone in ribs. also, just a sidenote -- on the foodnetwork website this recipe is listed as "easy". i shudder to think what "hard" is.

Classic Lemon Bars Recipe

the food was insanely good. ok i wanna do more of a recap but i gotta go. night.

here's a small hard to read flyer for a show i wanted to go to but didn't go to. dj die young and coralcola are really cool tho and i hope they keep on doing this night because the first one was really cool.
