note to self

when you have a large party and you expect there to be a lot of people in your kitchen, temporarily remove the knobs for the burners on your gas stove

also -- guys in Massachusetts have no style. sad but true sometimes. i was told this tonight, and had to share it.

hope you had a good one

yah dude. what this person actually said was "guys in massachusetts have no taste" or something to that effect.

as in all the college dudes are wearing polos and black tshirts and stuff. it's an interesting point. i mean its conformity right?

i wish i saw more ppl wearing colorful clothes, but i guess those cost money too

a loaded statement that is both true and false:

male fashion is clearly burdened by a conformist tradition which places a higher value on avoiding predatory labels (gay, hipster, prep, stoner, nerd, eurotrash, etc) than using clothes to express individuality. the idea that fashion 'rules' can't be broken is all part of a larger cultural ideology on which i will refrain from expatiating. pop culture and mainstream value systems which discourage risk-taking and style versatility have resulted in the domination of branding over all else. Mall brands like polo, gap, abercrombie, hollister, AE, nike, addidas represent just a small portion of this blight.

boston is a sports town, zealous about tradition and rife with middle/upperclass students who attend large universities and fear any type of social alienation attendant with a fashion statement. it is easy to conform in this town so many people do.

'boston' and 'massachusetts' however, are both places where fashion and style flourish, once the lens is trained outside of frat parties, soccer games, and other events involving BU and NU. the statement doesn't hold the same water on newbury st., harvard square, or even amidst the offbeat second-hand rags donned by the allstonites.

There were 13 polo shirts out of maybe 30 people at that party, i remember because sloan counted them when we got there. GO TERRIERS

lol, thank you for the insight. very well put. notice that i said SOMETIMES :)

but yeah. i mean its prob not true. just a gross generalization. it's not like the rest of the country is a fashion mecca

yeah when you think about it, boston, NY, and LA are probably the most fashionable cities, with philadelphia providing all the 'donts' for the rest of the country.
