town meeting

a lot of people yelled at Senator Specter. tough crowd.

"Mr. Specter was met by protesters as he left the meeting. He said he thought some of the objectors were genuine grass-roots and some were organized, egged on by talk radio. He also said the meetings had shown him that 'there's more anger in America today than at any time than I can remember.'"

welcome to new england won't you stay awhile

well, so much for looking for shooting stars tonight. those pesky clouds of fog!

"The meteors can appear in any part of the sky, but the tails of the meteors will point back to the constellation Perseus -- the shower's namesake -- in the northeast corner of the sky.

Another potential roadblock to your meteor watching: The weather. The National Weather Service calls for a "mostly cloudy" evening, and a cloud of fog had settled over Boston at around 6 p.m. this evening, delaying flights at Logan International Airport."

yo

yo hey i really dont like letting this blog be a little dormant, but its for the best right now, i got a couple other priorities

went to nyc for the weekend. went to long island, queens, and manhattan, and got lost in brooklyn on the way home today. good times! saw citi field (huge!) and the nytimes building (rad!) from the highway today, so that was cool

otherwise, enjoying august. trying to play basketball, get sun, get vaguely a tiny bit tan. should be a couple fun parties coming up, im gonna try to squeeze out every last little drop of summer in every day

check it out -- it's dee brown. did you know that reebok still makes shoes that you can pump? haha pretty funny

k, we'll see. bye.

mp3 beatdown

one of the most fun nights ive had. at the ica, one free complimentary drink courtesy of puma, great dj, great mc, 8 teams battling with 45 second mp3 punches in the ring for the heavyweight title belt.

showed up ontime and hung out looking over the harbor. what a nice setting. kicked it and gave props to the dj and said good luck to the lab crew and dapped up your boy c dubs. said whatup to your boy new from puma who produced the whole thing, gotta give thanks for that.

views of boston, tons of old school rap, many people having a good time, some incredible break dancing, some friends, it doesnt get much better. puma, you aint bad.

this rock was not here yesterday.

“Some of these things cannot be trained, obviously,” said Jennifer Murphy, a psychologist at the Army Research Institute and the principal author of the I.E.D. study. “But some may be; these are fighters who become very sensitive to small changes in the environment. They’ll clear the same road every day and notice ridiculously subtle things: this rock was not here yesterday.”

in support of all the troops and hoping you all come back home soon

inspired by another nytimes article -- In Battle, Hunches Prove to Be Valuable Assets

i'm going to go to the library tmrw and get joker one and read it.

collaborative filtering

wow what a phrase. my new favorite phrase. collaborative filtering. it's already how you experience the internet.

a group of people filter out bad information and identify and highlight the good information. this is how certain forums get their value.

looking for something? someone's found it for you and wants you to know.

-inspired by the nytimes article Netflix Competitors Learn the Power of Teamwork

the truman, i mean the marbury show

stephon marbury is my new favorite person. because he's amazing.

"Going bald at 19 is not sexy. Its not the jump-off."

after the 24 hour ustream thing he then did a nother justin.tv thing.

he's at justin.tv/starburytv

it's like the truman show! except it's the marbury show!

it looks like he's gonna be on the web until he signs a new contract! and if he doesnt? well, i guess we have a lot to look forward to

here's the 24 hour transcript with some good quotes -- marbury 24hr transcript | nba musings

i'll let you find the other links. yeah stephon! taking the internet by storm.

hi

hi how are you? i can't really talk, so we'll have to catch each other sometime soon.

here's a funny photo that's joking about the boston college quarterback situation. haha very funny, but who's actually gonna be the quarterback? will bc win any games? time will tell.

yah. everything's good. weather hasn't been so bad, i havent dropped any air conditioners on anyones head, haven't gotten any parking tickets, so i cant really complain.

so yeah, task at hand. gotta focus on the task at hand.

bonjour!

boating fail

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

here are all the cambrige farmers markets. what an exciting screenshot. i got a dozen eggs in central sq today. im gonna try 3 of them tmrw. am very excited. cya

NS 8 Flow 2

i saw unmistaken child today. it blew me away. i cried like 15 times. what a beautiful, stunning, pretty much unfathomable movie. wow.

and i wanna go back and see the hurt locker tmrw.

went to soulelujah. now my legs hurt.

here's the link for the trailer for unmistaken child. i'd recommend you see it if it's playing in your area. otherwise it's at the kendall sq cinema for the rest of the week.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

yo

yo in 30 seconds here's how it went down -- 4th of july weekend was great. busy and fun and such. this past weekend was also terrific. busy and fun and friends.

tonight i went and saw dj rupture and dj c at enormous room. totally impromptu show. thank god i get the enormous room emails, otherwise i wouldnt have known about it. went with some friends, bumped into a friend, good times.

i got a question as to where i got these strange photos from (i've posted a couple more)

here's the answer -- Carlo Van de Roer. just click on portfolio then the aura portrait machine. don't ask me how i found this, cause i don't really recall. but the photos are awesome

yeah. so i didnt do weekend recaps the past couple weekends. but everything has been pretty fantastic. and today i sat in the sun (lil sunburn) and played basketball (lil sore).

i had my first real introduction to cumbia tonight, and it was so cool. i had listened to it a bunch but for the first time tonight i got to hear it loud and live. i'll try to dig up some more information about it.

cumbia es en mi alma!

note to self

when you have a large party and you expect there to be a lot of people in your kitchen, temporarily remove the knobs for the burners on your gas stove

also -- guys in Massachusetts have no style. sad but true sometimes. i was told this tonight, and had to share it.

hope you had a good one

"What are you going to do about it? What are you ever going to do about anything?"

-sag harbor, p. 96

a fair trade booster seat

“I went back and it freaked me out,’’ the 39-year-old Brooklyn resident wrote. “Davis Square used to be a seedy area but a decent place to get a slice and a coke, or catch a game over a beer, but now appears to be a terrific place to sip a latte and, I don’t know, shop for a fair trade booster seat?’’

from On tiles, a story of gentrification

ya know those tiles in the davis sq t station? just as you enter on the side upstairs? even i remember those from taking the t as a teenager. pretty cool.

i guess that the tiles were created at a school, the Powderhouse Community School. i lived on powderhouse blvd right by tufts til i was 5. haha good work globe.

you can can also look at the projects web site, but it's crashed right now, due to extra traffic? who knows, but at least you can look at some more of the tiles on the background

deriving meaning from quotes

how about this one -- "Never write if you can speak. Never speak if you can nod. And never nod if you can wink."

here's my version, adapted for the 21st century -- "Never email if you can talk. Never talk if you can smile. Never smile if you can hug."

or how about -- "Never email if you can chat. Never chat if you can talk. Never talk if you can smile."

whoa, i managed to make my two similarly meaningless (or not?). i'll leave it up to you

what does it mean to you? all that i can think about is how i prefer talking on my cellphone to texting. as in, id rather that you just call me instead of text. ya know what i mean? not that there's anything wrong with either one.

another thing it means to me -- never email or chat online or talk on the phone if you can talk to someone in person. it's that simple. hmm.

did i already post this album cover? i'm diggin it...

the death race

terrific nytimes article and video. you should definitely watch the video first. or not. but just make sure you watch the video cause it's pretty good.

the death race is a ridiculous "race" set up in vermont where only a small percentage of people actually finish. there's a lot of barbed wire and problems and stuff. really entertaining.

i dont think i could ever do something like this. or maybe i could. but it looks really, really hard.

that being said, anyone wanna get in shape with me and try it next year? could be one of the biggest regrets of our lives! haha jk.

the two winners this year were marines, one american and one british. no way am i anywhere close to being as fit or tough or these guys. it's inspiring tho! you gotta be a little nuts to do this thing...

Pushing the Limit -- You Created It, Tough Guy. So Let’s See You Finish It.

i've come to peace with twitter

ok i'm not hostile towards twitter any more. it still symbolizes two things to me

1. the death of writing. it's now a special pleasure to read something written by someone that is not in txt form. actually writing something legible has just become a very rare and important thing. i really think this is a shift change in our culture. just look at me! -- i don't even capitalize anything! everyone is affected -- once you start txting and twittering you lose a sort of formality with language (granted, this is possibly a good and bad thing)

2. the ease of blogging. we call it twittering or tweeting, but it's just blogging. i actually think that's kinda cool. if ppl want to maintain a website from their phone, then more power to them. of course it's just one more thing that adds to us being so busy and overwhelmed with technology all the time, but i think that learning from using computers is one of the most important skills in the world today, and using twitter can actually be productive, so i back it.

sun is shining

in my imagination. rain pervades.

i'm swimming in a pool in california. it's 80 degrees. in my imagination...

quiet beeps

"I shall enter on no encomium upon Massachusetts; she needs none. There she is. Behold her, and judge for yourselves. There is her history; the world knows it by heart. The past, at least, is secure. There is Boston and Concord and Lexington and Bunker Hill; and there they will remain forever."

we ride

so i think this website has been submitted to search engines and stuff. bout to blow up. are search engines finding me now? who knows. will this website ever help someone wanting to find something via a search engine? who knows.

well lets see. i can attract search engine traffic. here let me list some keywords. britney spears. michael jackson. there that should do it.

or heck, let's throw in a couple more, see if we can really bring in that traffic -- cuttlefish, vacuums, wyomimg, quantum mechanics, trampolines, fighter jets. there that should be good. all those random keywords might get picked up my some search engine crawler.

but i dont want to get in trouble for using bad methods to drive traffic to my website. so yeah, lets pretend that this blog is about cuttlefish, vacuums, wyoming, quantum mechanics, trampolines, and fighter jets.

it has been all along

here's the first photo i took at the starkey show. it's of a different dj but still pretty cool.

now it looks fine tho

k nevermind

these photos are from sf tweed, you get the idea

"On my flag got red and blue.
Yes I said it red and blue."

when i drop my cellphone on the ground

when i accidentally drop my cellphone on the ground or elbow it off a table in my room, it harmlessly falls to the ground. there's a case on it. it doesnt break. like an iphone. the screen stays intact. thank goodness.

friday night was the cambridge dance party. i wouldnt have made it if jeff hadnt tipped me off about it. i went last year after finding out about it on boston.com, pretty much outta nowhere. i relied on chance this year too, and thankfully made it.

it was madness. i swear everyone shows up to this thing. more ppl than you can imagine. they close down a part of mass ave, get a professional soundsystem, all these crazy lights, its awesome. there are 4 huge speaker stanchions (ooooh good word, almost as good as evince), images projected on city hall, a dj booth, etc.

i showed up after 9 or something, the guy played michael jackson the whole time, which was pretty awesome, and a fitting tribute. it's sad that he passed, but it was good that we celebrated his life and music.

so yeah, there were more young ppl out in the middle of the street than at anywhere else in greater boston from about 7-11pm on friday night. they have to shut it down at 11pm cause there's a senior center right there.

i showed up with matt and adam, we danced a bunch, watched some breakdancing, sang along, watched it rain, watched the rain miraculously disappear, etc. there are 3 youtube videos that ill post in case you want to check it out some more

later!

"trying to think of LL lines in the back of my head"

rap lyrics again. this might become a theme.

i went and saw Starkey at goodlife bar in boston on wednesday night. the starkbot. the starkbass. the man of seclusiasis. the man from illadelphia. the legend from mary anne hobbs's generation bass show.

going in, i knew that the bar was high. this show had the potential to be better than the Caspa show that i saw last year, but it would be a tall order.

the winner? Starkey, by a nose. or a record. or a laptop. no matter -- he killed it. dropped exclusive tunes, got on the mic, got the crowd fired up, played straight for an hour and a half, very high energy. had the place thumping.

though it was raining, a good crowd showed up. rowdy and loud and amped. i took some photos that ill post later. here's the terrible flyer (not just my opinion, the boston dubstep djs felt the same way).

it was Starkey's first show in Boston, so we had to show him how we get down. i screamed a lot. i tried not to elbow anyone. a speaker blew out suddenly but came back to life, Starkey accidentally shut off his system at one point, but it was an amazing set with many highlights.

i talked to dj alex incyde for a while. we talked about hotflush recordings (the label he works on), online publishing, the north shore, nyc, sub.fm, bedroom broadcasting, etc. dj pandai'a dropped a brand new mount kimbie tune. incredible.

here's the link for hotflush. they've gotten a lot of attention with mount kimbie. i really feel that mount kimbie is revolutionary and making their own sound.

Hotflush Recordings

i'm very lucky to live in boston where i get to see some of the best dubstep djs in the world, though Starkey says that he plays "street bass." his gutter music is chock full of thick bass and big beats. a night i wont forget

davesplat.com

it's official -- i've registered a domain. which you might ask? what else...

davesplat.com

it's been fun doing this blog and having ppl read it. i wanna give a shoutout to the top readers/non creepers -- you know who you are. i'd post your names but i'm actually not even entirely sure who reads this anymore.

please support me by commenting, emailing, etc. i actually have an email address @davesplat.com now, but i dont feel like putting it on the blog. so, if you dont have my email address and want to get in touch with me, please just post a comment.

thanks yall. couldn't have done it without you (oh yeah and im allowed to feel particularly good about maintaining a blog and not letting it die because now you all have twitter and i cant even understand what's going with all the @'s and stuff. it doesnt make any sense. but please keep it up, cause ive started checking yall out.)

this blog is a creative outlet for me, it lets me be weird, and it helps to have a responsive audience. so crush me, cause it's the best kind of motivation

and in the spirit of randomness, here's the first google image result for davesplat. this is not me, but it's still a dave, and he's still a splat.

peace

there was a soccer game yesterday

one team lost. one team won. i may write about it later, but i just read a couple terrible writeups about the game, so i'm just gonna let us all enjoy the moment for a bit before i chime in. best to just criticize bad sports writing rather than produce your own.
